Drones use a huge amount of current for their brushless beast motors. So it's smart to measure that current and keep the drone in the safe zone. A very interesting project by Joop Brokking explains just that in case for his octocopter design. In order to keep the flight safe for a drone, there is a need to measure the current that goes to each ESC (electronic speed controller) for each motor.

While designing all the parts for his drone, he realized that each motor controller should have an over current and overheating protection. And to do taht, hen started designing his own PCB whit the current sensing modules for each of the 8 motors. To order your boards, use JLCPCB.com and select your color.

To solder the components, Joop Brokking sued a heating plate that he made with a PID control of the temperature. That device uses 3 thermocouples in order to be sure that the temeprature is exact. The reflow process is automatic. But first, he had to apply solder apste for all the components except the current sensors. Those are a bit expensive, so a good way to do this is to first check if the board works.
Once the components were reflowed, he uplaoded a blink code tot the ATmega chip, and it worked. So, now he could solder the current sensors in place, a total of 8 sensors, the ACS712 sensors. Now the board is ready and has to be programed. The tracks for the high current are parallel one to each other so the extra magnetic field will be canceled.

So there you ahve it. A very good design to sense the current for 8 brushless motors. Let's waith for futurte videso from by Joop Brokking and see how to program this board in order to do its job. In my opinion, it is a good design and would help a lot the drone project.

A big thanks to Joop Brokking. His channel is great and all his videos are good quality. If you want to make your own PCBs, use the services of our sponsor JLCPCB. Links are below.
